Kitty’s relationship was borderline perfect when she first discovered her mutation. As an only child living in Deerfield, an upper middle class suburb of Chicago, she seemingly had a perfect life. Her parents, Carmen and Theresa Pryde, loved her. She was a genius student taking college classes at 13, she was a dancer and participated in many other extra curricular activities, all in all it seemed like a picture perfect life.
However the same day Kitty’s mutant ability manifested her family was visited by one Miss Emma Frost, who was inviting Kitty to her school. Her parents loved Emma but she gave Kitty the creeps. Later that same day Professor Xavier and the X-Men came to visit Kitty and invite her to Xavier’s school and Emma Frost took that opportunity to kidnap the X-Men. Kitty ended up saving the team and bonding with Storm and Wolverine.
Kitty’s parents however blamed the whole incident of Kitty being missing for two days on Xavier and refused to let her go to his school so Jean wiped their memories of the last few days to convince them otherwise. That made Kitty’s relationship with her parents a little bit strained.
Once at Xavier’s Kitty talked to her parents less and less, with Storm and Wolverine kind of taking on the roles of her mother and father. Then, when her parents called to tell Kitty she was transferring to the Hellfire Academy (a transfer that lasted all of one day) Kitty became very angry with them.
Then, one Christmas break, Kitty followed her dad to Japan (afraid he was in some kind of trouble) only to see he was dealing with the Yakuza in Japan. When Kitty was discovered her dad gave Kitty to the samurai Ogun to save his own life. Wolverine eventually rescued her from Ogun’s hold, and neither of them ever really talked about what she went through. Kitty and her father barely spoke after that.
Kitty left the X-Men a few years later after Piotr sacrificed himself to end the Legacy Virus, and went off to college at the University of Chicago. She regained a loving relationship with her mother (who knew nothing of the Ogun incident) and a nice relationship with her father. Unfortunately her parents divorced in that time and her dad eventually moved to Genosha and died there. Kitty learns he was on Genosha by seeing a security tape of him in Magda Square trying to save some children during the sentinel holocaust. She sees his death on the video.
Kitty blames herself for not being there to save him, that guilt was one of the reasons she rejoined the X-Men.
Kitty and her mother are on good terms but her life seems so separate from her mother now that the don’t talk much. She still views Wolverine and Ororo as more parents then her real parents ever ended up being.
